Being Outside Isn't Enough

Why presence (not just exposure) changes how you feel.

Show Notes

What if the reason you feel stressed, scattered, or disconnected isn’t because you’re not spending enough time outside, but because you’re not actually experiencing it?

That’s the idea at the center of this week’s conversation.

In this episode of Next Door Neuro, I sit down with Sarah Nielsen - a health and outdoor educator and board-certified wellness coach - to explore what it actually means to engage with the natural world in a way that impacts your brain, your attention, and your well-being.

Because here’s the reality:

Most of us are spending the vast majority of our lives indoors. And even when we do step outside… we bring the indoors with us.

Our phones.

Our notifications.

Our fragmented attention.

So while we might be physically in nature, mentally - we’re somewhere else.

In this conversation, we unpack what that means.

We talk about how screens are reshaping our experience of the world around us, turning special moments into something we document instead of something we actually feel, and what we’re missing as a result.

We also explore the science behind why nature works in the first place, from stress reduction and attention restoration to the sensory and emotional inputs that our brains are fundamentally wired for… and that modern life often removes.

One of my favorite ideas from this conversation is something simple yet profound:

“Sips of nature.”

The idea that you don’t need more time outside. You don’t need epic hikes or big trips.

You need small, consistent moments where you’re actually present.

A short walk.A few minutes sitting outside.Even just looking out a window and noticing.

Those moments add up. And they can meaningfully impact how you feel, how you focus, and how you move through your day.

A few things we explore in this convo:

- Why being outside isn’t enough if your attention is somewhere else

- How phones are changing our experience of nature

- What we miss when we’re not fully present

- Why nature improves stress, focus, and overall brain function

- The difference between “big experiences” and daily exposure

- How to start taking small, consistent “sips of nature”

If your brain fuels your life… what fuels your brain?
